As a parent, it is important to support your child and help them grow into successful, intelligent adults. This includes academic and emotional support. Your time with your child is critical, therefore, I do not believe in hours of homework deterring from family time. Instead, I have developed a simple plan to support your child's academic growth that takes less than 1 hour a night while reinforcing the foundational skills learned at school each and every day.
Step 1: Spend 25 minutes per night reading with your child. Alternate between out loud to your child and having your child read to you. It is important the book is interesting to your child and at the appropriate reading level. After reading, ask your child to retell the story and talk about the key elements such as characters, setting, and plot.
Step 2: Ask your child to write in a journal every night for 10 to 15 minutes. Your child can write about any subject. The possibilities are endless. I encourage reading the journal together each day.
Step 3: Practice math facts each night for 10 minutes. This can be done by using flash cards or just writing problems on a piece of paper. It is important to practice all 4 math operations: adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing (depending on the operations already learned in school.) Please have fun with it by mixing it up and even turning their learning it into a game.
Please feel free to contact me for ideas or more information on this simple plan!
